Furthermore, the nation's first undergraduate degree program in automotive engineering will meet the rapidly changing needs of an industry that is transforming itself at an unprecedented pace as a fast-growing number of vehicles become electric and autonomous. Beauty, innovation and meaning in transportation design trace their roots to ArtCenter. Our graduates lead design studios at most of the major automotive manufacturers around the world. ArtCenter's transportation design legacy includes iconic vehicles through the ages, from muscle cars to supercars to family cars to almost any new concept car unveiled each year at the industry's flagship auto shows.
Degrees Offered
Although UC Davis does not offer an automotive-specific major, students are able to tailor their major requirements, focusing on ground vehicle systems or thermodynamics classes. Ranked #4 in US News’ round-up of the best engineering schools, Purdue’s main campus offers a top-notch mechanical engineering degree that allows students to specialize in automotive engineering. Whether you want to design new technologies, conduct research, or work in the pit at major motorsports races, Purdue’s labs, electives, and clubs allow students to get hands-on experience in a wide range of fields. In 2023, Purdue alums worked on the teams that won both the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600. Known globally as one of the best automotive engineering schools, MIT is a great fit for research-focused students who want to design innovative technologies.
This course partners students with industry professionals to solve real-world engineering problems. Well-known as a pioneer among automotive engineering schools, Clemson University was the first in the nation to offer a Bachelor’s degree in automotive engineering. Clemson offers a dual Bachelor’s/Master’s degree program, a senior project that allows students to design a car from scratch, and coursework that looks toward the future of automobile trends. We’ve learned that experiential learning is highly valued by students; hence, we plan to leverage the experience gained with Deep Orange, a hallmark of Clemson’s approach to graduate engineering education, and offer a chance to undergraduates to work alongside M.S. Alternatively, they can engage in research under faculty mentors in state-of-the-art lab space in EIB on the main campus or research centers at CU-ICAR.
As highly trained specialists in an ever-evolving field, automotive engineers are the folks who make our roadways run. Behind the scenes, they’re designing traditional, electric, and hybrid cars, innovating self-driving car technologies, and making sure our vehicles are as safe as they can be. At the best automotive engineering schools, students gain significant hands-on experience solving real engineering problems through internships, capstone projects, and design competitions where teams work collaboratively to produce small-scale racers and eco-conscious cars.
Purdue University
The graduate student cohort stands at 436, out of which 152 are Ph.D. students, 131 are enrolled in M.S. The complete picture looks truly inspiring to me, so let me offer that glimpse into the future. The trajectory is already set, and goals are very much aligned with the Clemson Elevate strategy.

The school actively disseminates information through newsletters, hosting seminars, and organizing conferences that bring experts together. In response to the uncertainty and volatility arising from the unprecedented evolution of the engineering field and its many industries, ISD collaborated with U-M’s world-renowned faculty and leading industry and government experts to revamp our curriculum. Undergraduate students at the College of Engineering in Ann Arbor have the opportunity to speed their progress towards an ISD Master of Engineering degree through the Sequential Undergraduate/Graduate Study (SUGS) program.
The College for Creative Studies nurtures the creativity that is vital to the enrichment of modern culture. The College educates visual artists and designers, knowledgeable in varied fields, who will be leaders in creative professions that shape society and advance economic growth. The College fosters students’ resolve to pursue excellence, act ethically, embrace their responsibilities as citizens of diverse local and global communities, and learn throughout their lives. The College engages in community service by offering opportunities for artistic enrichment and opening career pathways to talented individuals of all ages.
The success of the latter can be judged among other things by the established long-term partnerships with industry. From the bachelor's level to graduate certificates, our academic offering allows us to focus on industry needs and continue to produce highly sought-after graduates. Investigating concepts for controlled manipulation of particulates in unit operations, such as sorting, separation, and transfer, for applications including healthcare diagnostics and therapeutics, materials processing, manufacturing, environmental detection, and remediation. Research relies on acoustic, electric, magnetic, hydrodynamic, and mechanical phenomena to conceive innovative approaches for particulate manipulation. With an emphasis on recent advances in engineering fundamentals and practice, this degree prepares students to be innovators who can address global problems in this technologically dynamic and compelling field. Our diverse range of programs is unified by an unwavering commitment to outstanding teaching and research aimed at creating a global impact through engineering and scientific approaches.
Automotive design is a highly competitive and demanding profession that requires a combination of artistic talent, technical knowledge, and business acumen. You'll need to have a strong visual sense, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to communicate your ideas effectively. You'll also need to master various software tools, such as CAD, Photoshop, and Sketchbook, to create sketches, renderings, and models of your designs. To enter the field, you'll typically need a bachelor's degree in industrial design, transportation design, or a related field, from an accredited institution.
Merging of the two programs, Mechanical and Automotive, already successful in their own right, creates critical mass in more areas and positions us well for elevating student experiences and scholarly contributions even further. Robotics for manufacturing emphasizes automated technologies for assembly lines, quality control and logistics to bring efficiency to production. Investigating next-generation materials, advanced modeling, characterization, testing and manufacturing technologies to enable the efficient development of innovative, high-performance, high-quality products for energy, transportation, communication, health and sustainability applications. Particular emphasis is placed on extreme materials and manufacturing, lightweight and durable materials, functional materials, meta-materials, circular materials, and biomaterials/biomanufacturing. The Integrative Systems + Design Division offers the opportunity for students to achieve INCOSE certification. This academic equivalency allows U-M graduate engineering students to bypass taking the certification exam to become certified system engineers, a major benefit.
The School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering embodies Clemson’s vision for elevating student experience, the ascension of research, and meeting evolving societal needs statewide and beyond. This degree can be completed fully online from almost anywhere in the world, or on-campus here in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Innovating and educating in the areas of mobility, energy, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing. Every time I took an ISD class it was immediately applicable to what I was working on in my career. Building automobiles today and in the future involves possessing a critical set of integrative skills and thinking, such as the ability to understand how to trade off things like cost and function, crash safety, ride and handling, stress analysis, all from an integrative mindset. Transportation Design will be a STEM-designated program for students starting in the fall of 2021.
